5th XI LOST 3-1 v EBOG 5s (Old Boys Cup)

Nick will update this post with more thoughts later in the week but for now suffice to say it was always going to be tough against a team flying in their division (two above our own) and on the day the better team won, but we gave a good account of ourselves. It was hard work on a soggy pitch against a lively oppo who had more of the ball and to be fair created more chances than us, but after falling behind to a strike of the highest quality from outside the box into the far top corner we got to half time level, with Darragh "tough-mudder" Deering poking the ball over the line after Dan Avis had unsettled their keeper from a Ross Blackmore free kick. We were behind quickly in the second half, a speedy young winger finding space behind our defence and pulling the ball back from the byeline for an easy tap in, but we did not give up and could have scored again when Darragh rose like a salmon at the far post but his header flew the wrong side of the bar from a brilliant free kick by David Campbell. With legs tiring we conceded a third goal on the break but I am proud of the effort everyone mustered. It was a good team effort but I am obliged to highlight the contribution of Billy Phillips who was fantastic on the ball and whose work rate was phenomenal.
