Match Reports for Saturday 31st January 2015

Another bad weekend in terms of the pitches, and we lost both our Home games to mud/waterlogging, and our 5th XI game. However, the snow in Merton melted in time for the 3s to record a strong result, winning 5-2 in south London, and our 4th XI were unlucky to lose 5-4 at Firs Farm against Southgate, with Jake getting a brace. Justin and Dan were the other goalscorers. Can only imagine the state of the goalmouths at the end of the game given how much action there was in each penalty area!

5th XI v Southgate Olympic Lost 5-2 Scorers: Kyriakides, Phillips Having not played together for some weeks due to waterlogged pitches, we were a bit rusty, and not really quite on the same wave length. Nevertheless, this was a game we perhaps should have won, certainly if we'd taken our chances in the first 15 minutes or so, when we really should have been 3-0 up instead of only one goal to the good. We started brightly, with Alex K getting a goal in the first five minutes by nipping in on some cumbersome oppo defending, though appa rently taking the chance in slow motion walking the ball into the net. Unfortunately for the oppo, their 'keeper fell awkwardly in attempting to get the ball, a

Finally we got back into action after some serious waterlogging, with all teams playing bar the 5th XI. The 1st XI lost 3-0 in the Middlesex & Essex Senior Cup against a very strong Old Hamptonians side who will give their semi-final oppo a tough tie. The 2nd XI worked hard for their win at Lyonians, finally coming through 4-1 in what was a much tighter affair than the scoreline implies. Kudos to Kyri and the lads for focussing on their title push after some blank weeks which sometimes can derail a team's momentum. The mighty 3s under Mark Tansley walloped Norsemen 5-2 on what was a mudbath of a pitch. Probably one of those games that should not have been played but at least we got all 3

5th XI LOST 7-2 (Away) v Southgate Olympic, Junior Novets Cup. All other games waterlogged off. First half was very even, with ourselves going a goal ahead early on after we broke from the edge of our box, with Mark Guildea's perfectly weighted pass forward finding Alex Kyriakides. He had a lot to do to keep possession under challenge, then run on to the goal, and slot home. So it was a great piece of forward play by him. The game was quite even for a while, with the oppo missing a couple of opportunities they should have converted whilst our players ball watched. Eventually 1-1 at half time was a fair scoreline at that point. In the second half the oppo came out of the block very quickly,

Match Reports for Boxing Day 2014

Mixed XI - Lost v Old Finchleians 6-5 Vets/Mega Vets - Lost v Old Finchleians 5-1 We were up against a good set of Finchley players on Boxing Day and in the end came up short (only just in the case of the Mixed/Younger XI). Kudos to the Blackmore family, where Ross netted for the youngsters and dad Geoff tucked away his re-taken penalty for the oldsters with aplomb. Great hopspitality from our hosts at Finchley, although the raffle in the clubhouse was hugely suspect with a whiff of the "Sepp Blatters" about it...!

Match Reports for Saturday 20th December 2014

2nd XI and 3rd XI - won 3-0 and 13-0 v Southgate Olympic 2s and 3s. The weather took its toll on the pitches and we were left with just 2 fixtures, both won comfortably against Southgate Olympic. Mark Tansley's boys were in fine form, smashing 13 past Southgate 3s, whilst Mickey Byrne's lads were comfortable in the end with a 3-0 victory to keep them near the top of their division.
